Victoria Mine Power Infrastructure Project

BESTECH executed a multi-phase power infrastructure project for KGHM’s Victoria Mine, focusing on the design and implementation of a new 230 kV substation and a comprehensive 13.8 kV site distribution network. Our work included detailed engineering, tender document preparation, and commissioning, enhancing the mine's operational efficiency with a robust power system.

KGHM required a multi-phase power infrastructure project for the new Victoria Mine, an underground operation located east of Sudbury, Ontario, focused on extracting high-grade nickel-copper and precious metals. The challenge was to design and implement a power system that met the extensive needs of both the surface and underground operations.

BESTECH executed the engineering and design work for this ambitious project, encompassing two major parts. The first part involved creating a new 230 kV to 13.8 kV 50 MVA substation, complete with all necessary civil engineering, concrete foundations, steel design, and power systems engineering. The second part of the project focused on 13.8 kV site distribution and networking preliminary engineering, ensuring comprehensive power and fiber distribution throughout the site.

Key Features:

  • Part 1: 230 kV Substation
    • Designed and engineered a 230 kV to 13.8 kV substation.
    • Installation of a 13.8 kV 3 MW generator for standby power.
    • Various studies, including grounding, short circuit analysis, and arc flash studies.
    • SCADA/HMI and PLC/RTU system design and programming.
  • Part 2: 13.8 kV Site Distribution & Networking
    • Development of site standards for electrical equipment and implementation of automation standards.
    • Design of core network switch and site communications.
    • Preliminary designs for control rooms.

From 2013 to 2016 BESTECH delivered exceptional value to KGHM. The project not only met the mine’s complex power requirements but also secured critical funding for study elements. Our engineered designs and solutions set a new standard in efficient and reliable power infrastructure for mining operations.
