Wireless Network Upgrade and Security Enhancements for Xstrata Mines
BESTECH undertook a project for Glencore (as Xstrata) to upgrade their wireless network across multiple mines and surface buildings. Our work involved expanding wireless access, enhancing bandwidth, and improving network security using Siemens controllers and Enterasys wireless access points. The project successfully improved operational efficiency and provided secure, robust connectivity for Xstrata’s mining operations.Xstrata required an extensive upgrade of its wireless network across various mines and surface buildings. The challenge involved not only expanding wireless access but also replacing the existing network backbone to accommodate increased bandwidth and enhanced security.
BESTECH was tasked with this significant wireless network upgrade. Our approach included replacing the existing network infrastructure with Siemens controllers and Enterasys wireless access points. We also established Virtual LANs (VLANs) to control access to various critical applications, ensuring both functionality and security.
Key Features:
- Comprehensive upgrade of the wireless network infrastructure.
- Implementation of Siemens controllers and Enterasys wireless access points.
- Establishment of VLANs for controlled access to applications like personnel tracking and remote rig control.
- Provision of guest access to internet and email within Xstrata mines.
- Project management and expert consultancy, including coordination with a sub-consultant for installation.
Through BESTECH’s leadership and expertise, Xstrata’s mines received a state-of-the-art wireless network, providing not only enhanced bandwidth and connectivity but also robust security measures. This network upgrade significantly improved operational efficiency and provided a secure platform for various mining applications.
