BESTECH at 30: A Conversation with Marz Kord on Growth, Challenges, and the Future
As BESTECH marks its 30th anniversary, the company is entering an exciting new chapter under the leadership of its new president, Marz Kord. With a strong background in the mining and engineering industries, Marz brings a fresh perspective to BESTECH’s ambitious growth plans while maintaining the company’s legacy of innovation and client-focused solutions.
In this sit-down interview, Marz shares insights on BESTECH’s expansion strategy, lessons from multinational firms, and how the company is positioning itself for long-term success in Ontario’s evolving mining and engineering landscape.
Can you give us an inside look at BESTECH and some of its recent milestones?
BESTECH is a leading engineering project management consultancy based in Sudbury Ontario, specializing in the mining industry. We work with a wide range of clients, from global industry giants, to emerging mining companies. While our primary focus remains mining, BESTECH has expanded its services to sectors such as power generation and alternative energy. The majority of mining companies want a partner when designing their mining projects. Our team of over 100 offers a more personalized service than larger multinational firms. We take full ownership of projects, ensuring that our clients receive the same level of dedication and expertise as if they have their own in-house team.
How is BESTECH applying global best practices to better serve its clients?
We are trying to emulate the entrepreneurial approach to growth that some multinational engineering firms have. BESTECH remains committed to leveraging specialist global knowledge and applying cutting-edge technology to better serve our clients. Our three decades of experience working in a mining hub like Sudbury, allows us to efficiently support projects in other mining hubs globally, including the Americas and Europe. As we grow, we recognize the importance of building foundations to maintain our reputation, with our people being our greatest asset. BESTECH is currently developing a strategic plan to support ambitious growth in the coming years.
Which services are driving the most value for mining companies in Ontario?
Since its inception 30 years ago as an electrical engineering firm, BESTECH has seen a shift in demand from clients looking for more comprehensive mining project support. This includes everything from initial concept design and budgeting to detailed engineering and post-production monitoring. Clients increasingly prefer to work with a single consultant from start to finish, which fosters accountability and ensures projects stay on track. As part of our strategic expansions, BESTECH recentered our focus on providing our clients with more comprehensive environmental services by bringing it in-house. Everything we do is to serve clients engineering needs at every stage of their projects.
How do strong engineering partnerships drive success in the mining sector?
I admire the companies who have set the standard in our industry, providing full-scale engineering work on time and within budget. At BESTECH, we take pride in our long-standing client relationships, some of which are as long as our tenure as a company. This loyalty reflects our ability to consistently meet client expectations. A key factor in successful partnerships in ensuring continuity across all phases of engineering. When a single company oversees the entire project lifecycle, it fosters accountability, leading to more cost-effective, timely project completions.
What challenges have you faced since stepping in as BESTECH’s president?
Like the wider mining industry, BESTECH has faced challenges, particularly in terms of investment in junior mining companies. Many development-stage companies are delaying progress on projects as they await funding, which impacts engineering timelines. However, we have not seen the same decline in work from our larger clients, and we remain optimistic about the industry’s future. I believe that in 2025 and beyond, as investments begin to flow again, there will be a resurgence in project development, which presents a great opportunity for BESTECH to expand our client base.
What’s next for BESTECH as it gears up for the future?
Looking ahead, BESTECH is focused on strengthening Ontario’s position as a global mining hub. We’re committed to helping local clients with projects in other jurisdictions while also expanding our reach to new clients globally. In 2025, we will begin our growth phase, increasing our workforce to better meet the needs of our clients. This will involve adding talent to deepen our expertise in both mining and other engineering divisions. Over the next five years, we aim to double our workforce, building on our 30 years of experience and our reputation for excellence, as we continue to expand.
BESTECH is looking ahead to a bold new phase—one that builds on its rich history while setting the stage for future growth. With a strong team, a client-first approach, and a vision to expand both its workforce and global reach, BESTECH is charting a course to remain at the forefront of engineering innovation.
